Abstract
Résumé Les transformations de la société italienne depuis la deuxième guerre mondiale ont souvent été interprétées en termes d’anomalie, voire de retard, ou encore de modernisation inachevée. Sans nier les apports de ces interprétations tout comme les fortes spécificités de cette société, nous préférons insister sur la voie originale empruntée par les sociétés italiennes dans leur façon d’agencer tradition et modernité tout en maintenant de fortes diversités socio-territoriales. Cela conduit à replacer la question du développement économique, de l’État providence, de la famille, des traditions locales et des classes sociales dans une perspective structurelle qui permet de montrer comment « désordre public » et « dynamisme privé » interagissent et produisent une cohérence sociétale complexe que l’on ne peut réduire à une « anomalie » ou un retard dans le développement.
