Abstract
Depuis plusieurs années, les institutions carcérales sont confrontées au problème de la présence, derrière leurs murs, d’une population présentant des troubles importants de santé mentale. Or, la prise en charge de cette population semble se heurter à de nombreuses difficultés, difficultés que nous avons analysées à partir d’une étude dans divers établissements correctionnels du Québec. Il ressort ainsi, qu’en dépit d’une dénonciation récurrente de la vulnérabilité de ce groupe, les condamnés avec des problèmes de santé mentale se retrouvent dans un cercle de contrôle et de dépendance encore plus marqué que celui du condamné sans problèmes particuliers. Ignorés, oubliés, infantilisés, ces détenus se retrouvent dans une situation de précarité importante. Faute de moyens, sans lieux d’hébergement adaptés, les interventions réalisées auprès de cette population, dont les troubles sont d’ailleurs rarement dépistés, sont généralement réduites à une simple distribution de médicaments. Elles accentuent d’autant plus l’isolement et l’exclusion auxquels se trouve soumise toute population captive.
