Cet article s’intéresse à l’institutionnalisme dans l’étude de la politique contestataire. Nous faisons une distinction entre un ancien institutionnalisme qui met l’accent avant tout sur le rôle des institutions politiques et des opportunités institutionnelles (accès au système politique, configuration du pouvoir, stratégies des autorités, etc.), d’un côté, et un nouvel institutionnalisme qui se propose de réintroduire la notion de culture ainsi que les aspects discursifs des opportunités politiques, de l’autre. Le néo-institutionnalisme permet ainsi de combiner les facteurs politico-institutionnels et culturels dans l’étude de la politique contestataire. Un bref exemple portant sur la mobilisation politique des migrants illustre les avantages heuristiques de cette approche et de son corollaire méthodologique, soit l’analyse des revendications politiques dans l’espace public.
