Abstract
Explorateur de l’entre-deux, Zola est un écrivain des marges — marges sociales, le faubourg, le peuple —, marges de ce qu’on appelle, sur le plan physiologique, le normal ou encore le sain. Cette double exploration est à l’origine et au centre des Rougon-Macquart, dont elle constitue une des grandes innovations. Elle repose, en particulier, sur la conviction que la maladie, les états pathologiques, les marges révèlent mieux les failles de l’homme et de la société, en mettant au jour leur partie cachée et problématique. Une étude de la spatialité dans La fortune des Rougon, premier roman du cycle, montre une structure spatiale posant les idées-forces de la série et sa vision de la société, disant le « mouvement du siècle », les efforts pour briser les positions acquises, pour passer du dehors au dedans, d’un groupe à l’autre, explorant le monde sous le monde et ses bouillonnements.
