We report herein the synthesis and spectroscopic properties of a sensitive off/on fluorescent antioxidant indicator prepared by coupling a free radical scavenger segment (Trolox) to a fluorophore segment (BODIPY). The adduct exhibits a remarkable decrease in emission quantum yield compared to the free BODIPY precursor, and the emission is significantly restored upon adduct scavenging peroxyl and alcoxyl radicals. This novel fluorescent indicator directly reports via emission enhancement the antioxidant depletion and the onset of radical-mediated oxidation.
