La transition à la parentalité a été l’objet d’innombrables études mettant d’abord l’accent sur le déclin de la relation conjugale après l’arrivée de l’enfant. Les études et bilans récents de ce domaine ont par la suite nuancé ce constat, évoquant plutôt la diversité des perceptions selon les sous-groupes. Ils font appel à de nouveaux paradigmes misant sur la complexité. Cet article émane d’une recherche par récits de vie auprès d’une trentaine de couples en union de fait ou mariés, choisis pour leur diversité de milieux, de professions, d’appartenances culturelles. L’analyse des récits croisés par la durée de vie en couple avant la naissance et l’existence ou non de projets de procréation permet d’explorer les changements vécus par les couples lors de cette transition et de dégager des éléments d’interprétation des variantes dans la perception de ces changements appuyés sur une approche de parcours de vie.
