Le désengagement de l'État en matière de santé soulève des questionnements importants dans notre société. Les tâches liées aux soins et au soutien exécutées en milieu naturel, plus particulièrement dans les familles, sont essentiellement assumées par les femmes, car elles constituent une extension des activités domestiques. À partir des données empiriques d'une recherche menée au Saguenay, les auteures entendent démontrer que le transfert d'une partie des responsabilités des soins au milieu naturel peut contribuer à renforcer le rôle de maternage des aidantes naturelles et accentuer leur isolement et leur absence de la sphère publique. La valorisation que les femmes peuvent retirer de la prise en charge est soutenue par des systèmes de légitimation et des symboles. À partir d'une typologie empruntée à Paul Ricoeur, les auteures montrent qu'il faut faire preuve de prudence devant ces systèmes qui peuvent engendrer de l'individualisme et une relation asymétrique entre l'aidante et la personne aidée.
