Abstract
Dora Bruder est une oeuvre ambiguë en ce qu’elle se présente comme un livre d’archives et de traces, construit sur l’enquête que mène un narrateur pour découvrir la vérité sur une jeune fugueuse pendant l’Occupation. Il a d’abord appris son existence par un avis de recherche lu dans un vieux journal de 1941. Mais ces archives, sans cesse sollicitées et citées, ne permettent pas d’accéder à ce que cherche le narrateur. Il ne peut communier avec la jeune Juive, finalement déportée à Auschwitz, que par un effet d’identification et d’imagination qui reconstruit la fiction là même où, doutant de la littérature, il voulait la bannir. L’enquête comme mise en scène de l’archive se penche alors sur l’écriture de l’Histoire comme sur le pouvoir de la littérature à dire le réel et à conserver la mémoire. Le livre mémorial devient lui-même archive et trace, tombeau monumental de destins minimes, mais redécouvre la valeur heuristique et dénonciatrice de la fiction.
