Abstract
Este artículo analiza la trayectoria política de Mariano Matesanz de la Torre tanto en su condición de político profesional como en la de líder corporativo. Su dilatada vida política comenzó durante la Restauración en las filas del Partido Liberal, continuó luego, tras la ruptura del mismo en los años de la Primera Guerra Mundial, en las filas del albismo, para concluir, por último, ya en el marco de una política democrática, como "independiente" durante la II República. Pero un independiente que se situó en la órbita del Partido Agrario nacido a principios de 1934. Porque Matesanz, sin renegar nunca de su liberalismo, bebió fundamentalmente de las fuentes del agrarismo de inspiración castellanista, un fenómeno difuso, de contornos imprecisos y mal estudiado, que, tras cuajar en el tránsito del siglo XIX al XX, permeó luego todo el período posterior hasta la Guerra Civil. Este artículo pretende ser precisamente una contribución al conocimiento de dicho fenómeno a través de una de las figuras que más se significaron en esa línea desde su doble perfil de político y empresario.
