Abstract
A dimethyl formamide-catalyzed synthesis of N, N -diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (DEET) from toluic acid and oxalyl chloride in an introductory organic chemistry laboratory course is presented. Students use this procedure and another procedure previously reported in this Journal . Thus, beginner chemists have the chance to compare complementary synthetic methods.
