Les thermes du Phénix: a “lost” Roman bath-house at La Malga, Carthage

Abstract
Quoique le parc archéologique de La Malga, situé à la limite nord-ouest de Carthage, soit dominé par une série d’énormes citernes, il contient aussi plusieurs autres structures d’époque romaine dont peu ont fait l’objet d’une étude approfondie. Parmi ces structures, des thermes connus sous le nom de Thermes du Phénix , datables probablement du second siècle, ont reçu l’attention d’archéologues canadiens en 2000, à l’occasion d’une étude plus générale sur les édifices thermaux à Carthage. Les vestiges étudiés comprenaient certains secteurs d’un large frigidarium équipé de plusieurs bassins, dont un décoré de mosaïque, et d’un caldarium bien conservé avec traces de boisseaux le long des murs. L’ensemble de ces structures témoigne d’un type de thermes publics de dimension moyenne bien attesté en Afrique romaine ailleurs qu’à Carthage.
