Abstract
Les Carnets de travail ont montré comment Flaubert travaillait à partir du principe de la collection, rassemblant en un même fonds « égalisateur » tous les éléments devant composer ses descriptions. D'abord mis en pratique en Orient, où Flaubert considérait tous les éléments du décor comme des entités de même valeur, ce procédé scénographique a pour effet de créer un plan de façade et de mettre l'observateur à distance. Passage de l'assortiment à la structure autonome, le procédé est fréquent dans l'oeuvre, où le regroupement des objets sur un même plan d'inscription permet de transformer le décor en spectacle.
