Abstract
Résumé La libéralisation des échanges et l’essor des technologies de l’information et de la communication favorisent la consolidation de plusieurs secteurs à l’échelle internationale. Dans le secteur des services financiers, les fusions et les acquisitions ont fortement augmenté depuis quelques années. Le Canada possède un secteur financier «consolidé» et les grandes sociétés financières souhaitent un cycle de «mariages» pour accroître leur importance. Le gouvernement fédéral est dans une situation de juge par rapport aux enjeux de ces transactions. La première partie de cet article retrace l’évolution de la position du gouvernement face aux fusions des grandes institutions financières. La deuxième partie relève les coûts et les bénéfices de telles transactions. Enfin, la troisième partie analyse le poids que l’opinion publique pourrait avoir quant à l’issue de ces projets.
