L’élément central de cette lecture de l’oeuvre de Marguerite Duras est l’analyse d’une scène de La vie tranquille où la narratrice ne se reconnaît pas dans le reflet de sa personne que lui renvoie un miroir. Nous voyons dans cette scène une destitution du moi par la mise à distance de l’image de soi qui fut investie sous le regard de la mère (Lacan). Par un travail laborieux qui s’étend sur toute la seconde partie du livre, l’énonciation désamorce l’identification principale, fusionnelle et mortifère, au profit d’une multiplicité d’identifications. Elle instaure ainsi une nouvelle structure identitaire dont les possibilités semblent presque illimitées : le soi tend vers une altérité intérieure qui lui permettrait de demeurer en perpétuelle réélaboration. Ce passage d’une instance à l’autre, de « ma personne » aux « elles », est vécu par le personnage comme une mort, une mort à soi qui doit être distinguée du voeu de mort, de la haine et du dégoût de soi que l’on retrouve chez plusieurs héroïnes de Duras. La distinction opérée dans cette analyse pose La vie tranquille à part des autres premiers romans (Les impudents et Un barrage contre le Pacifique) et fait ressortir un point commun que ce livre relativement peu connu entretient avec le grand succès de Duras : L’amant. Plutôt que d’aborder L’amant comme une reprise d’Un barrage contre le Pacifique, notre lecture souligne quelques-uns des nombreux aspects par lesquels le livre de 1984 reprend un travail abordé en 1944 dans La vie tranquille.
