A basic assumption in probability sampling is that the sample derived will be representative of the population from which it was drawn. In this research note, several systematic sampling strategies are examined to determine which sample provides the most accurate estimate of a known population parameter for the total number of visitors entering a recreation site. Using alternative sampling start times and duration of sampling time periods, the results indicate that a strategy of randomly sampling rather than systematic sampling of visitor entries produces superior estimates regardless of sample size.
