Abstract
Cet article présente l'émergence de deux disciplines à l'Université Laval : la chimie et la physique. L'étude se situe à la jonction de la biographie et de l'histoire des disciplines scientifiques dans un contexte de développement social et institutionnel. Trois générations de chimistes et de physiciens, les pionniers, les maîtres et la relève, se côtoient. Les pionniers proposent un enseignement renouvelé et s'engagent dans la création d'institutions, mais ils ne produisent pas de connaissances nouvelles. Les maîtres introduisent les méthodes d'enseignement et de recherche importées d'Europe. À la fin de la période, les membres de la relève sont prêts à assurer la transmission des connaissances par l'enseignement et la production de nouvelles connaissances à partir de leurs propres recherches.
