Abstract
The work of the journal rests on many shoulders and this includes colleagues in Wiley-Blackwell, abstract translators and statisticians. The process of reviewing papers is dependent on our many reviewers, and particularly editorial board members, working with the three co-editors. I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to the members of the editorial board for their work over the past 12 months and to welcome new members. I am pleased to announce that Professor Lluis Ferrer of the Department of Animal Medicine and Surgery, Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB), Spain has joined the board as a co-editor. Lluis Ferrer has been at the UAB for a number of years holding various posts including Head of the Department of Animal Pathology and Production, Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Rector of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. His research is centred on canine Leishmaniosis and he has published many articles and co-authored several joint international publications. He has been a visiting professor to the Universities of Cornell, Utrecht (Netherlands), Guelph and Montréal (Canada), and Lisbon. So he is well placed to work with the international community of veterinary dermatologists and with the journal. David McEwan Jenkinson is retiring as a co-editor after a 20 year association with the journal beginning in the very first volume with co-authorship of a series of articles on ovine parapox infection when he was working at the Moredun Research Institute in Scotland. While David has been an editor he has also been an Honorary Research Fellow of the Faculty of Biomedical and Life Sciences of the University of Glasgow, a post he has held continuously since 1973 even during a spell as Scientific Adviser (Animals /Food) to the then Scottish Office –now Scottish Government. His life long research career has included studies of animal thermoregulation; mammalian skin structure and function, with a particular focus on the physiology of glandular activity in the skin especially the sweat glands; and latterly cutaneous immunopathology. His collaborations with Hugh Elder, Douglas Bovell and colleagues led to the publication of two large and authoritative reviews on equine sweating and anhidrosis in this journal. His CD-ROM textbook on cutaneous structure and function is still a leading reference source on comparative skin biology. I would like to extend my thanks to David for his dedication to the journal and particularly for helping inexperienced authors to improve their submissions not least through his association with “Dr McFlannel”. This mythical person, that he created to keep criticism of manuscripts impersonal, has helped many an article in this and other journals to be improved and particularly to remove unnecessary material, making for a much more succinct text. He has now begun collaborating on a project digitising and annotating the deteriorating slides of the Historic Histology teaching collection at Glasgow University and is continuing (as a qualified teacher of Speech and Drama) to provide courses in oral presentation. We wish him well. We also say thank you and farewell to editorial board members Silvia Colombo, Peter Hill, Des Tobin and Emily Walder. Peter Hill deserves a special note of thanks for his long association, to date, with the journal, initially as an author and reviewer and then more recently as a co-editor. He has also co-edited the proceedings of the World Congress of Veterinary Dermatology recently published by the journal. We welcome Chiara Noli, Anette Loeffler, Danielle Reel and Monika Welle to the editorial board. I am always happy to receive suggestions for future editorial board members and for reviewers. Veterinary dermatology as a discipline does not stand still and we particularly look for expert reviewers in the various areas of molecular biology that are being applied to the study of veterinary species with dermatological disease. Readers will have noticed a substantial body of research published in this and the first issue of 2010 which focuses on canine atopic dermatitis. While there are various reasons for this level of activity I would hasten to add that studies of a dermatological nature in other species are also very welcome.
