Dans cet article, les auteurs dégagent quelques éléments d’un diagnostic du racisme au Québec dans plusieurs secteurs de la vie sociale à partir de la littérature québécoise sur cette question. Ils s’interrogent également sur le degré d’efficacité des mesures institutionnelles de lutte contre le racisme et proposent des pistes d’action susceptibles d’orienter leur devenir. Ces deux moments de l’analyse, constat et proposition d’actions de lutte contre le racisme, sont reliés par une hypothèse. Considérant l’analyse sociologique récente du phénomène dans divers contextes, les auteurs supposent en effet que le racisme traverse une importante période d’adaptation à la modernité démocratique et que les institutions qui auraient jusqu’ici réussi à endiguer le racisme n’auraient plus dorénavant une bonne perception de ses enjeux réels. Cette mutation du racisme rend plus complexe la recherche de moyens efficaces pour en maîtriser les effets. Dans la dernière partie du texte, une approche antiraciste élargie est proposée, qui s’impose d’autant plus, selon les auteurs, qu’elle constitue un des éléments les plus faibles des politiques qui se sont succédé en matière de relations intercommunautaires et civiques.
