Abstract
Nul ne contestera que la disparition annoncée des rites ne s’est pas réalisée. Au Québec comme ailleurs, les sociétés modernisées en ont plutôt profondément transformé les dispositifs symboliques. Là où les traditions se sont effritées, des pratiques nouvelles, parfois sauvages, prennent leur place. Là où elles perdurent, notamment dans les institutions chrétiennes, elles reçoivent des significations inédites et souvent imprévisibles. Valeurs « séculières » et valeurs « religieuses » s’y entremêlent, sacré et profane s’y confondent parfois, au point qu’on ne sait plus ce que signifient, par exemple, les pratiques massives du baptême, du mariage, des funérailles chrétiennes. Peut-on encore en parler comme de purs rites religieux? Et qu’en est-il de la sécularisation des rites?
