Early in 2009 I got a call from Greg Partyka informing me of my selection as the 2009 SEG Honorary Lecturer for North America. I felt extremely honored, even surprised in having been selected, but then some trepidation started to set in about what I had got myself into and if I was up to the task. However, over the following months my colleague Dave Mackidd, through a feeling of justifiable responsibility after having nominated me, helped put together my lecture with the somewhat intriguing title “The magic of Lamé.” By the time I was ready to start the tour, I had gathered examples from nearly 15 years of applying AVO inversion methods to E&P drilling challenges. Given the resulting length of the lecture, I must apologize to some of my audience who could be forgiven for thinking that the material had been accumulating since Gabriel Lamé's original lectures in eighteenth century Paris!
