Grâce à son emplacement géographique, Moncton a été le centre ferroviaire des Provinces maritimes pendant presque un siècle et est devenu, à partir des années soixante, un important centre de distribution et de services. Aujourd’hui, Moncton joue un rôle remarquable dans le développement des Maritimes en tant que centre important de télécommunications et de technologies de pointe. De plus, c’est la ville canadienne qui présente la plus forte concentration d’Acadiens. Depuis 1994, à la suite des réformes politiques du gouvernement du Nouveau-Brunswick concernant les services de garde à l’enfance, la survie de ces services dépend complètement des fluctuations de l’offre et de la demande. Les données des Services à la petite enfance de la région de Moncton indiquent que, depuis ce changement, sur la centaine de garderies agréées existantes, 10 % ferment leurs portes chaque année, alors que 20 % s’ajoutent à la liste. Dans ce contexte, à l’aide d’un système d’information géographique (SIG), nous avons cherché à dresser un portrait global de la dynamique de l’implantation des garderies au cours de la période 1990-2001.
