Abstract
Les premiers-nés du baby-boom constituent une génération charnière en raison de leur poids démographique, de leur avancement en âge et leur position et leurs responsabilités au sein de la chaîne intergénérationnelle. On a pu observer que les grands-parents québécois de la génération du baby-boom s’impliquent, indépendamment de l’origine ethnoculturelle et de la classe sociale, d’une façon relativement inédite dans le développement de leurs petits-enfants. Il apparaît ainsi utile de comprendre leur situation à l’intérieur de la chaîne générationnelle puisqu’ils semblent observer des rapports familialistes d’un type nouveau. Nous pouvons en effet parler d’un lien électif qui primerait la solidarité mécanique (on choisit comment et dans quelle mesure on s’implique). Cet engagement va à l’encontre des idées véhiculées dans la société contemporaine sur les baby-boomers, tout en nous amenant à « réfléchir aux valeurs qui sous-tendent les choix de nos sociétés » par l’entremise d’une nouvelle éthique des relations intergénérationnelles.
