Abstract

We analyze the throughput performance of cognitive ad-hoc networks. The designed network use modified IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol for media access purpose. Also, cognitive communication is limited by the interference imposed on primary users for the designed cognitive network. First, we determine the channel availability probability for this opportunistic network. We then use this probability to propose the embedded Markov model in the cognitive nodes. Using this Markov model we determine the normalized throughput of cognitive nodes. The normalized throughput, variance in throughput and percentage of dropped packets performance reveals that number of cognitive nodes, transmit power, packet length, primary users' interference constraint, and number of antennas used have significant effect on the channel availability and throughput.
