Résumé Au Québec, une grande variété de pratiques sociales professionnelles sont inspirées par les idées de l’éducation populaire et de l’organisation communautaire, tant dans le secteur public que dans le secteur associatif et ce, depuis de nombreuses décennies. Cet article s’interroge sur les modes de justification de ces pratiques, les questions sociales auxquelles elles visent à répondre, les ressorts de leur développement ainsi que sur l’ancrage social et politique des savoir-faire développés dans ce champ à partir des années 1950.
