Enprenant comme point de départ théorique le concept de système sexe/genre, l'auteure analyse les interactions entre les artistes femmes, leur travail, leur identité sociale et sexuelle et leur lutte pour obtenir la légitimité sociale. L'analyse de ces interactions met à jour un univers symbolique dans lequel les conflits et les contradictions sont souvent vécus comme étant individuels. Elles révèlent fondamentalement des représentations propres à un système sexe/genre à travers lequel se perpétuent les rapports sociaux de domination entre les hommes et les femmes.
