Abstract
A falta de uma historia de unidade nacional, tanto quanto de uma elite nacional abrangente ou de uma tradicao ampla de mesticagem cultural priva Mocambique da integracao que, tradicionalmente, se associa com a producao de narrativa em prosa. Ja que nao se impuseram outras formas de pertenca, a ideologia revolucionaria da FRELIMO sustentou a descricao da mocambicanidade. Ainda hoje escritores como Mia Couto e Nelson Saute referem-se a esta ideologia como a fonte de um sentimento compartilhado de pertenca. Couto reconhece a multiplicidade de identidades experimentada pelos mocambicanos no presente da mundializacao; ao mesmo tempo, insiste que a primeira identidade para todos ainda se encontra na 'patria mocambicana'. O livro de estorias de Couto, O Fio das Missangas (2004), depende de imagens do enfrequecimento do espaco da nacao e do desmoronamento do comportamento masculino patriarcal tradicional. Neste contexto, surge a figura do artista como um motivo unificador. Empregam-se imagens do artista para dar ao livro uma unidade estetica; esta unidade artistica corresponde a imagens da unidade sobrevivente da nacao que se opoe a fragmentacao infundida pela mundializacao. O tema da descrenca nas doutrinas do nacionalismo revolucionario, da masculinidade patriarcal ou mesmo da cultura africana tradicional (visto que a maioria das estorias decorre num ambiente urbano) confere uma posicao privilegiada ao artista, apesar do livro considerar com cautela quaisquer 'outras formas de pertenca'.
