Abstract
Après la fin des guerres napoléoniennes, la Révolution française et le jacobinisme demeurent une menace réelle aux yeux des autorités britanniques. Notamment en raison de la répression, et de l’hostilité aux « principes français », les courants radicaux, à l’exception d’adeptes de Thomas Paine comme Richard Carlile, se gardent de mettre en œuvre les références aux traditions françaises. Cependant, au tournant des années 1820 et 1830, un tournant s’opère : parmi les whigs, 1789 est réhabilitée, et la révolution de 1830 montre qu’une révolution française n’est pas forcément sanglante. Bronterre O’Brien entreprend de son côté un culte politique de Robespierre, minoritaire dans le mouvement radical, mais qui se poursuit après le chartisme, jusque dans les années 1850. Au-delà de la Commune de Paris, la tradition révolutionnaire française demeure une référence dans le débat politique, bien après que la menace qu’elle représentait pour les élites se fût estompée.
