Abstract
Pendant les années 1920-1930, la France est témoin d’une campagne, menée par de nombreux commentateurs et critiques catholiques, hostiles à ce qu’ils considèrent un théâtre moralement corrompu, en faveur d’un théâtre qui véhicule des valeurs spécifiquement catholiques. Dans ses Douze leçons sur l’histoire, Antoine Prost s’interroge sur une histoire qui accepte comme légitime la voix collective d’entités particulières qui se désigne par le pronom « nous ». On peut appliquer cette interrogation au cas du théâtre catholique pour savoir si la voix stridente en faveur du théâtre catholique représente le groupe « catholiques ». Cela amène à une réflexion sur un certain nombre d’« entités incomplètes », non seulement dans le rapport du catholicisme à la vie et à la culture nationales après 1905, mais aussi dans le rapport du théâtre catholique au théâtre tout court, où ceux qui parlent « pour » les catholiques cherchent à réinstaurer cette entité comme véritablement collective et dans leur propre milieu et dans la société française en général.
