Abstract
Le désengagement de l'État providence, Nicole F. Bernier, Montréal : Presses de l'Université de Montréal, coll. Politique et Économie, 2003, 268 p. Au seuil du 21ème siècle, alors qu'émergent des débats passionnés sur les tenants et les aboutissants de la mondialisation néolibérale et des nouvelles formes de régulation politique qui la sous-tendent, la question de la place de l'État dans la société est devenue un sujet politique de premier plan. Des discussions internationales sur les préceptes du Consensus de Washington (privatisation, libéralisation, déréglementation), au projet de réingénierie de l'État au Québec, l'interventionnisme étatique est remis en question de toutes parts. Le rôle de l'État, et notamment sa dimension providentialiste, se situe ainsi au cœur des clivages idéologiques contemporains et donne lieu à toute sortes de prises de position.
