Cryptomelane and birnessite form of manganese dioxides powders have been investigated in mild aqueous sulfate based electrolytes using the cavity microelectrode (CME) technique. The micro electrochemistry on small quantities of powder allows the study of active materials, without the use of a binder and an electronic conductor, and also can be performed at high potential cycling rates. A few hundred nanograms of the pristine isolated MnO 2 powder is electrochemically characterized in sulfate based electrolytes with or without conductive acetylene black, making possible a kinetic approach highlighting the outer and inner surface contribution in manganese dioxides energy storage. The cation effect of the electrolyte is also showed.
