Abstract
Based on long‐term research with rural Roma, the article calls attention to new forms of racial segregation in post‐socialist Slovakia. Building on traditional avoidance patterns, ordinary residents and municipal authorities alike are delineating de‐facto ‘whites only’ neighbourhoods where Roma are not tolerated. This happens in defiance of EU anti‐discrimination legislation and as a reaction to integrationist housing policies implemented during the socialist era.
