L'auteur cherche à établir la signification et la portée des premiers longs métrages québécois sur l'ensemble de la société canadienne-française. À travers l'analyse de deux films, Un homme et son péché et Séraphin, Michel Brûlé met en relief l'écart entre les structures sociales et la culture. L'analyse montre comment, contrairement aux apparences, ces films sont des critiques et des contestations d'une idéologie traditionnelle et comment ils s'insèrent comme praxis de l'imaginaire dans le vaste débat de fond qui préoccupait le Québec de la fin des années 40.
