Abstract
La multiplication et la politisation des identités, presque toujours associées à la promotion d’intérêts ou de droits particuliers, heurtent de front les certitudes universalistes et rationalistes sur lesquelles la société et l’État modernes sont échafaudés. Le phénomène a suscité une littérature abondante et diverse, en particulier dans le domaine de la philosophie et de la théorie politique. Les auteurs font d’abord un bilan succinct de cette littérature, pour réfléchir ensuite à la manière dont celle-ci interpelle et interroge l’imagination sociologique. Ils s’inscrivent en faux contre le type d’approche qui réduit la question identitaire à une pathologie psycho-politique ou à une difficulté d’ingénierie sociale pour laquelle il existerait des solutions d’ordre moral ou éthique. Ils proposent les linéaments d’une réflexion sur la façon dont la sociologie devrait traiter cette question.
