En France, le ministère de l'Education nationale invite les enseignants à développer, pour la mise en place de projet d'éducation relative à l'environnement, des partenariats notamment avec les musées de sciences. Dans cette perspective, l'objet de cet article est de proposer une clarification de la nature pédagogique de la médiation environnementale dans le contexte des musées d'histoire naturelle. Nous abordons dans une première partie les différentes approches scientifiques privilégiées au sein des expositions, en parallèle avec l'évolution des sciences de la nature. Dans un deuxième temps, nous postulons qu'une approche critique et sociale est nécessaire au sein des expositions et que le musée de sciences, qui tend de plus en plus à devenir une interface entre la sphère scientifique et la société, a réellement des cartes à jouer. L'exemple d'une exposition présentée au Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle de Paris, Nature Vive, montre de quelle manière une exposition peut concilier la dimension patrimoniale avec la dimension critique des réalités environnementales.
