À la fin du xviiie siècle, Rivarol affirmait : « il faut que la raison sèche cède le pas à la raison ornée ». Cette notion de raison ornée traite d’une figure de rationalité qui combine les charmes du discours avec les exigences du raisonnement. C’est du moins ce que les œuvres de la marquise de Lambert nous invitent à penser, notamment ses Nouvelles réflexions sur les femmes (1727), texte qui représente l’une des expressions les plus complètes d’une culture dominée par une conception oratoire de la raison.
