Abstract
Cette article prend comme terrain d'étude un espace montréalais (la rue McGill) afin d'analyser le processus de tertiarisation entre les années 1842 et 1934. D'une manière spécifique, nous traitons des dimensions urbanistiques et architecturales reliées à ces changements. Condensé de l'histoire du tertiaire urbain à Montréal, l'aménagement de la rue McGill met en lumière des tendances de développement qui prévalent dans la métropole moderne. Jusqu'en 1900, l'économie tertiaire est contrôlée par des marchands de tailles variées et dont les activités s'inscrivent dans un marché local et régional. Après 1900, les activités commerciales reculent pour faire place aux activités manufacturières et aux bureaux dans le secteur des transports et des communications. La place du tertiaire de direction marque alors le nouveau rôle assumé par la rue McGill dans l'économie montréalaise.
