RÉSUMÉ Au-delà du Stammbaum. Théories modernes du changement linguistique Deux thèmes dans l'histoire de la linguistique historique sont discutés en détail : (1) L'École néogrammarienne et son rôle dans la formulation (i) d'un modèle du changement linguistique, et (ii) d'une méthode scientifique pour la reconstruction de lexèmes et de traits linguistiques ancestraux. (2) La doctrine saussurienne de la langue comme système et son influence sur les écoles linguistiques du 20e siècle, à savoir le structuralisme, la géolinguistique, le générativisme, la sociolinguistique variationniste. À la fin de l'article sont présentées quelques observations sur les implications de l'étude du changement linguistique pour l'étude du changement socioculturel.
