Abstract
Ce premier article sur « Le Bas-Canada et le Courrier des États-Unis de New York (1828-1840) » explore la presse de l'Amérique francophone dans la première moitié du XIXe siècle. Son propos global entend faire voir dans quel contexte s'est formulée l'idéologie d'une « vocation de la race française en Amérique ». Cette importante vision d'avenir du Canada français n'est pas sortie de la cuisse de Jupiter mais fut UN des scénarios possibles élaborés après les rébellions de 1837 et de 1838 et au moment de la crise annexionniste de 1849. Après avoir donné une idée des références faites au CEU dans la presse bas-canadienne avant 1840, le texte analyse la perception des rébellions dans le journal francophone de New York marqué par sa fondation bonapartiste.
