This paper investigates equivalent lateral force design provisions for determining the seismic base shear found in several international design standards. Six standards were chosen from around the globe to investigate their approach to seismic design and the effect of regional differences. Design standards were selected from Canada, USA, the EuroCode, Uganda, India, and China. The seismic base shear for a simple multistory regular structure subjected to a particular ground motion was determined per the provisions in these six design standards. In order to better understand the resulting differences between each standard, the seismic base shear calculations were broken into distinct common components (ground motion, soil interaction, seismic resisting system, and structure importance) and their individual value and resulting impact on the seismic base shear were compared. This paper is of interest to structural engineering faculty involved in seismic engineering research or in teaching seismic design. This paper is also of interest to design professionals involved in international projects. This paper is also of interest to code developers by providing a broader perspective on how other code developers from around the globe approach seismic design. Readers of this paper will take away a review of the equivalent lateral force procedure found in ASCE 7-10 for determining the seismic base shear and an understanding of how other international design provisions approach seismic design.
