Abstract
Over history, sport has become an ideological and political issue used by authoritarian regimes. In France under the Vichy Government (1940–1944), sport became an instrument for constraining and indoctrinating the population in general and youth in particular. Decreed to constitute the new modern chivalry, sport played a role in the Vichy policy of maintaining order by promoting precepts of the National Revolution to the population. Extensive sports propaganda was actively used to glorify the cult around Pétain. Finally, the partisans of collaboration saw sport as an additional means of supporting Hitler’s new Europe.
