Abstract
La tradition de la mi-carême la mieux connue au Canada est celle qui consiste à se déguiser et à faire la tournée des maisons en groupe. Il y a une autre tradition, celle-ci moins connue, qui a survécu chez les Acadiens de l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard. Il s’agit de la Mi-Carême distributrice de friandises. Le soir de la mi-carême, elle se présente dans les maisonnées où il y a de petits enfants. À ceux qui ont été sages, elle donne un biscuit, une pomme, des bonbons ou autres friandises. Dans cet article, nous décrivons la tradition telle qu’elle a été observée dans le passé et la façon dont elle se perpétue de nos jours. Nous verrons aussi que cette coutume a jadis été connue dans certaines régions du Nouveau-Brunswick et de la Nouvelle-Écosse. Enfin, nous évoquerons les origines françaises de la tradition.
