Abstract
L’interrogation macrosociologique sur la société canadienne a été posée à partir de deux perspectives centrales : le changement social et le régionalisme. Ce qui est souvent oublié, c’est que la sociologie canadienne-anglaise a reçu une impulsion déterminante grâce à l’étude d’une région particulière : l’Ouest canadien. La colonisation et l’organisation de l’Ouest au cours de la seconde moitié du XXe siècle a suscité une série de comportements propres à la « frontière ». Ces comportements intéressaient un jeune État canadien qui cherchait alors à incorporer l’Ouest dans sa vision nationale. Cet essai montre comment cette période historique a produit des études de première force qui ont servi de fondement à une discipline en émergence au Canada anglais.
