L'economie du sport est un secteur qui represente de 1 a 3 % du PIB selon les differentes sources (par exemple, Taks & Kesenne, 2000 ; Conference Board of Canada, 2005). La depense sportive en biens et services des menages, de l'Etat, des collectivites locales et des entreprises connait une croissance superieure a celle du PIB (de 10,8 % sur la meme periode, voir tableau 1). Elle est estimee a 28,9 milliards d'euros en France, soit 1,75 % du PIB et 1,63 % de la consommation des menages (Comptes economiques du sport, MJS, Les chiffres cles du sport, Decembre 2006).
