Abstract
Le présent texte expose d’abord diverses estimations du coût direct des enfants au Québec. Ensuite, en tenant compte à la fois de la fiscalité et des mesures destinées aux familles, la valeur du soutien financier offert aux familles biparentales et monoparentales est déterminée pour divers niveaux de revenus. Les calculs des auteurs permettent de constater l’importance du soutien financier aux familles à faible revenu, sa diminution progressive au fur et à mesure que le revenu familial s’accroît et la présence d’une prestation de base universelle. Enfin, en combinant l’estimation du coût des enfants avec le soutien financier offert par l’État, il devient possible d’évaluer dans quelle mesure les aides publiques compensent le coût de l’enfant au Québec.
