Abstract
Cet article étudie les maximes proférées par les personnages héroïques du théâtre de Corneille. Étant donné l'imprécision des définitions traditionnelles, l'auteur construit une théorie du « genre sentencieux » (qui englobe proverbes, maximes, adages, etc.) qui se réfère au modèle linguistique de Culioli. Dans un second temps, il souligne l'intérêt pragmatique des maximes de Corneille, qui visent à se présenter au spectateur comme exemplaires, à la fois inédites et immémoriales. Enfin, le concept rhétorique d' éthos suscite une réflexion sur la relation entre l'énonciation de Corneille lui-même et la parole héroïque.
