Abstract
El chulla Romero y Flores (1958) de Jorge Icaza, (1906-1978) est un des derniers romans de Jorge Icaza. Le mot chulla est un américanisme d’origine quechua qui désigne les jeunes métis de la capitale. D’emblée, le surnom du protagoniste annonce donc son appartenance urbaine (d’ailleurs le titre du roman en français n’est autre que L’homme de Quito). En effet, El chulla est l’histoire d’un bureaucrate de Quito, qui aspire à devenir « quelqu’un » en essayant d’effacer ses racines indiennes. Notre travail interroge les formes et les figures de ce déni à partir de l’analyse de la représentation des célébrations qui scandent la vie et l’espace urbains. Les problématiques de l’identité métisse et du travestissement figurent parmi les axes de notre réflexion.
