Abstract
Cette contribution décrit un aspect particulier de la vie de la Société royale de Botanique de Belgique, durant ses 14 premières années d’existence. Née en 1862, cette société savante spécialisée se voulait, au contraire de l’élitiste Académie royale de Belgique, un lieu de sociabilité ouvert à tous les botanistes, amateurs comme professionnels, en rendant accessibles aux moins aguerris d’entre eux les pages de son Bulletin. Rapidement « capturée » par les professionnels de la science − ou aspirants tels − et par leurs ambitions, la société s’éloigna des amateurs, un « en bas scientifique » indispensable à sa survie financière, et une tension gagna la politique éditoriale du Bulletin. Certains en voulaient hausser le niveau, d’autres y voulaient laisser une place aux auteurs plus modestes. Rôle des personnalités dans les sociétés savantes, bottom-up science, vulgarisation et professionnalisation des sciences, sont autant de thèmes qui se donnent à voir dans cette étude.
