Estudió las literaturas alemána e inglesa, y ha trabajado como locutora de Radio de Alemán Occidental. Han aparecido cuatro volúmenes de sus poemas líricos: Mortefakt, Gitter mit Augen, Abschüssiges Gelände and Auβer Rufweite. Her poems have also been published in periodicals and anthologies and have been read on several radio programs. Many of them have been translated into Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Rumanian. The poem "Cythera" was set to music by Violeta Dinescu. Gisela Hemau has held readings in various German cities, in Zurich and in Washington, and at George Mason, McGill, and Colgate Universities.
