Atelier de « lieux communs », l’essai littéraire s’écrit à partir de fragments culturels critiqués, réorganisés, remis en mouvement, et son écriture à intensités variables engendre à son tour des idées mémorables, arguments frappés en images, objets citables offerts à l’avenir de la lecture. Cette circulation topique décide de l’échelle où s’élabore le savoir de l’essai, du tempo de sa prose, mais éclaire également un moment de son histoire : le XXe siècle français qui, de Remy de Gourmont à Roland Barthes, a constamment superposé la réflexion sur le genre à la question de l’écriture intellectuelle et de ses rapports à la rhétorique.
