Abstract
L'historiographie a longtemps mis l'accent sur les aspects sombres des milieux ouvriers montréalais au XIX e siècle. Les listes nominatives des recensements portaient en effet à croire que de très nombreux logements étaient partagés par des noyaux familiaux distincts. On y voyait un entassement issu de la pauvreté, une stratégie d'entraide imposée par la nécessité. Une analyse critique des sources, faite dans le cadre de l'étude d'un milieu ouvrier de banlieue, donne une autre image de ce phénomène. Il y a plutôt lieu de penser que la cohabitation était rare en milieu ouvrier montréalais, qu'elle était généralement transitoire et qu'elle se passait presque toujours à l'intérieur des familles. Ces dernières préféraient d'autres stratégies, dont les déménagements fréquents.
